In many parts of the world, birthdays are a given, a normal part of growing up. But in Kanungu, that is not the reality. Birthdays are not a tradition most children grow up experiencing. For many, it is not something that happens every year. It is a privilege, not a normal part of childhood. At WOOVC, our children are able to have that privilege because of their sponsors. Because of this support, we started celebrating birthdays for them, so they could feel seen, valued, and loved.

At first, we held birthday celebrations in classrooms and gave individual gifts to each child. But as we watched our children grow together, we realized that birthdays offered an even greater opportunity, not just to honor each child individually, but to strengthen the bonds between them. We wanted their special day to be a time of shared laughter, group joy, and collective memory-making. So we made a change.

We now hold birthday celebrations at our office, where every WOOVC child is celebrated together at the same time. This way, they get to experience the joy of cheering for one another, singing as one voice, and knowing that they belong to a larger family. They celebrate as one group, as one team, and as one family.
